THE CHAPEL, CONVENT OF THE SACRED HEART

Convent of the Sacred Heart, Armagh During the fire in 1964 much of the Chapel was destroyed. In the Lettres Annuelles for the period 1884 to 1885, it is reported that the altar in the Chapel was consecrated on the 8th December 1885. The Bishop of Raphoe delegated for Primate Dixon who was ill. He preached on the value of Christian education particularly that of the Sacre Coeur. It is also reported that many generous gifts were given to build the Chapel.

In November 1883 a generous gift of £500 allowed the building of the Chapel to begin. On the Feast of St. Catherine of Siena the first stone was laid by Primate Dixon. The Primate gave money to the nuns to build the Chapel and the organ was provided by the parents of one of the Sisters in the Society of the Sacred Heart. The Way of the Cross was also a gift from the mother of one of the Sisters. R M Vicar gave statues of the Sacred Heart, Our Lady and St. Joseph. A case of Altar Linen came from Jette in Belgium. The Mother General at that time gave a Ciborium. The white marble Altar was bought with the money gift from the Primate and many friends amongst the clergy. One of the gothic sanctuary lamps was a gift of the children of the Poor School.
