Saint Catherine’s College has a thriving Music Department, and pupils of all ages have the opportunity to be involved in Music in a variety of ways. Music is taken by all pupils in Key Stage 3. GCSE, AS and A2 level Music are also offered. Music tuition is provided in strings, woodwind, brass and percussion by the Southern Education and Library Board peripatetic music tutors. Voice tuition is provided by independent tutors. There is a strong tradition of Irish traditional music in Saint Catherine’s College, and extra tuition is available for tin whistle, fiddle, flute and accordion. From September 2005 vocal training will also be available specialising in Irish traditional singing. In addition to the Junior and Senior Traditional groups there are other musical ensembles such as the School Orchestra, Junior and Senior Choirs, brass group and harpists all of which perform at a wide range of events both local and beyond.A new professional recording studio was recently installed to facilitate the growing need for tuition in recording techniques as well as for coursework at GCSE and AS/A level. The philosophy of Saint Catherine’s Music Department is to meet the needs of all pupils in Music, whether they are composers, performers, or pupils who simply enjoy listening to music.
