In the Business Studies Department there are three full-time teachers, whose teaching experience ranges from 3 to 20 years. The Department has an excellent reputation with students and employers over the last 30 years. Subjects delivered are positioned between traditional Business Studies and computer related employability skills.

Great emphasis is placed on using a variety of teaching strategies. Most units of work use conventional examination testing and coursework.

Business Studies is taught in designated rooms. These rooms have computer access and data projectors to enhance teaching and learning.

Educational visits are widely used as a teaching aid. In the year 2007/2008 students have visited Ulster Television, the Belfast Telegraph, Tayto Castle and Norbrook. Students are actively involved in ‘Young Enterprise’, ‘Live Wire’, Invest N.I. and Young Consumers competitions.

All Year 11 GCSE Business Studies students compete for the prestigious Young Business Person Shield. Pupils are required to develop a mini business from an original idea, conducting market research, producing a final product and successfully selling their products to staff and pupils. The young tycoons have to evaluate their business idea and make a PowerPoint presentation to the ‘Dragons’ Den’. The budding entrepreneurs present their business plans and answered a series of drilling questions from a panel of judges.

Congratulations to Ann Marie Donaghy, on winning the ‘Young Business Person Shield’ 2007.

In Sixth Form students can take Business Studies at AS and A2 level, whilst vocational A levels are offered in Applied Business at both full and part award.
Key Stage 4 students can choose from Double Award GCSE ICT, GCSE Business Studies, and GCSE Business Communications Systems.

Both academic and vocational examination results in the Business Studies department are well ahead of the national average. In August 2007, two year 12 GCSE Business Studies students were ranked top in Northern Ireland in CCEA Summer GCSE examinations. Aislín McCurry year 12, was awarded joint second in Northern Ireland and, Aisling Duffy, whose GCSE Business Studies coursework, referred to as “outstanding”, is being retained by CCEA as an example of good practice.

The Business Studies Cup is presented on Prize Night to the student who has made the best overall contribution in Business related subjects
