St Catherine’s school library is an opportunity where all students can strive for and achieve success. With a stock of over 6000 non fiction and 4000 fiction, the library addresses a broad range of reading levels to accommodate all users. By providing teachers and students with a full range of print and electronic resources to support learning, the school library impacts student achievement.The adjacent IT room provides Library Inquiry and Internet access for all users. There are also a selection of daily newspapers, both local and national which provide a range of views and news. CD ROMs on each subject and the INFOTRAC online newspaper facility are also available.Years 8 to 12 visit the library on a 2 weekly timetable with their English teacher but are encouraged to use the library before and after school, and break and lunch times. A successful team of library assistants from Year 13 assist in the library during these periods. Year 14 avail of the library for study and research purposes. Miss O’ Brien adds new resources through the year to keep collections dynamic.READING RECORDS Reading Records are issued to years 8, 9 and 10. The aim of the Reading Record is to create a desire and interest in reading. These handouts provide a structure to model, encourage and aid students perceive reading as a fun and purposeful life skill. As an incentive, pupils are awarded a certificate at their end of year assemblies on successful completion of the record.LIBRARY NEWSLETTER A library newsletter is published twice yearly to promote the library and involve pupils. Various events in the library are covered such as top readers, recommended reading and author profiles. Pupils are encouraged to contribute book reviews and other relevant articles.COMPTETITIONS/EVENTS Throughout the school year, seasonal competitions take place so pupils can express their creative talents. World book day events, book sales and author visits are also organised where possible.ESSENTIAL ARTICLES The library has a range of essential article folders which are updated annually. These are resource files on topical issues ranging from racism to child abuse. Pupils and staff can avail of these in the reference section for project work, class debates or general knowledge.
