The Spanish Department is made up of three members of staff, each of whom deliver classes in other Departments of the school’s Language Department. In addition, as Spanish is a consortium subject with Saint Patrick’s Grammar School, classes in Years 13 and 14 are shared between one of the teachers of Spanish in Saint Catherine’s College and the Teacher in Charge of Spanish in Saint Patrick’s Grammar School. Sixth Form pupils also avail of the opportunity to attend classes with a Spanish Language Assistant whose contract of employment runs from September to May of each academic year.Two of the members of the Spanish Department have rooms allocated in the school’s Barat Building, each of which are equipped with a P.A.L.E. listening system used to develop pupils’ listening skills. Each room is equipped with Classroom 2000 and data projectors.Spanish is introduced to three classes in their Year 10 at Saint Catherine’s College when they are offered an introductory course in Spanish. At the end of Year 10, pupils may choose to continue their study of Spanish to GCSE level and on into Sixth Form, at both AS and A2 level.Students in Year 11 and Year 13 are strongly encouraged to participate in a two week exchange programme with pupils in a school in southern Spain. The programme is organized jointly by schools in the SELB area since September 2005 and prior to this had been running successfully under the auspices of the SELB International Unit. Pupils from Saint Catherine’s College go out to Spain at Easter of Year 11 and host the return visit by their partner in September of Year 12.The Teacher in Charge of Spanish within the Spanish Department has a wealth of experience in organizing trips abroad and recently has begun to alternate between offering our Key Stage 3 pupils the opportunity to travel to Paris/Madrid on a 5 day trip.Success in the study of Spanish is recognised at the annual Prize Giving ceremony when the Premio de Espanol is awarded.
