Welcome to the Drama Department.

The Drama Department is a vibrant and expanding department, which places a major emphasis on the creative interrelationship between practice and theory. Staff members are active and committed. Our aim is to provide pupils with a centre for the study and creation of theatre and drama through a reflective and critical contribution to innovation in contemporary production and performance practice.

At present two specialist teachers deliver a programme of Drama to students in Key Stage 3, one through the Irish medium. We offer courses in GCSE Drama and we hope to offer 'A' Level Drama and Theatre Studies at Post 16 in the future.

Drama is mainly situated in Halla O' Fiaich which is equipped with blackout facilities, lighting bars, fresnel, flood and power-can lighting, a computerised lighting board and an integrated sound system. The drama store is also located within Halla O' Fiaich. From September 2006 B11 will also be used as a drama centre. The Crush Hall houses a Proscenium Arch stage and can operate as a fully functioning theatrical venue with blackout facilities, backcloths, tabs, cyclorama, rostra, flats, lighting, and integrated sound system.

In Year 8 pupils are allocated two periods of Drama per week. In Year 9 pupils have a single period of Drama. In Year 10 pupils have access to double periods of Drama through the modular system, currently in operation for subjects within the Creative and Expressive Arts.

Results achieved by our large numbers of junior pupils are excellent and are testimony to the hard work and vitality of our students and teachers.

Departmental meetings are held to support the Drama teachers and to keep staff informed. A forum is given for staff to express their views on issues affecting the Department.

The knowledge skills and understanding required within the Drama programme are defined within one attainment target, Making and Appraising.

We provide a wide range of extra curricular activities including Drama clubs, theatre visits, productions and field trips. These activities contribute to the friendly, dynamic atmosphere within the Drama Department.

At the heart of all our work are our many students. We intend to provide our students, parents and teachers with many exciting learning opportunities, lasting friendships and wonderful memories.
