"Well organised homework can play a vital role in raising standards of achievement"
Department for children, schools and families
This is our school Homework Policy. You should use this to guide you when you are completing work that your teachers set you to do outside of the classroom. You should discuss this policy with your parents and use it to help you complete your homework as best you can.
Teachers set homework to:
- Motivate you to study and revise effectively on your own;
- Develop independent study skills;
- Help you to develop new skills or to practise skills already learned in school;
- Involve your parents and let them see how you are coping with learning and how they can best support you;
- Help you identify those areas that you need to ask your them to explain in more detail;
- Allow them to assess your progress and help you to learn better.
Homework does not just mean written work. Teachers will vary the type of homework which they set depending on your year group, class, subject and topic of study. Here is a list of the different types of homework your teachers may set:
| Written work |

All of these homeworks are important and must be recorded in your homework diary.
If you think that you will be unable to complete an ICT based homework, you need to tell your teacher so that he/she can make arrangements to help you complete the homework.
Your teacher will:
- Write your homework on the board
- Give you time to note your homework in your diary during class
- Explain the homework again if you tell them that you don’t understand it
- Explain all homeworks clearly and give you lots of guidance for assessed homeworks
- Keep a record of the marks that you achieve in homework
- Note in their mark books, the report book and your homework diary when you don’t do homework or don’t complete it to a satisfactory standard
- Listen to you if you are concerned about a homework deadline.
Your Form Tutor will:
- Check your homework diary regularly to make sure that you are using it effectively
- Check that your parents are signing it every week.
If your Form Tutor sees your name in the Report Book at registration the following morning they will:
- Check your homework diary to make sure that you have had the note from your teacher signed
- Check that you have now completed the homework to the required standard
Your Parents will:
- Ask you how they can help with homework
- Check that you have completed your homework
- Sign your homework diary every week
- Let the school know if you are finding homeworks difficult
Marking Homeworks If you are a Key Stage 3 pupil, your homework will be marked using the following scale:
| -6- |
An outstanding homework which has exceeded your teacher’s expectations in terms of understanding, research, detail and presentation. |
| -5- |
An excellent homework, beautifully presented, reflective of great time and effort and demonstrating a high level of understanding. |
| -4- |
A very good homework presented appropriately, shows that you understand everything that you were asked to do. |
| -3- |
A good homework, properly presented which could have been improved if you had spent more time on it. |
| -2- |
A satisfactory homework which meets the basic standards for effort and presentation. |
| -1- |
A poor homework which reflects little effort on your part and which you have not presented in the way you were asked to. |
- Homeworks can be marked during class by the teacher or sometimes by your peers using guidance from the teacher. Longer homeworks will be assessed by your teacher and returned to you by an agreed deadline
- Your teacher will comment in detail on longer homeworks or projects, informing you of what you did well and how you could have improved your work.
- Your end of year report will include the details of the standard of homeworks that you completed during the year and how many you did not complete.
If you are a Key Stage 4 or Sixth Form student, your homeworks will be marked according to the demands of your examination syllabus.
IF YOU ARE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT HOMEWORK DETAILS. YOUR TEACHER WILL EXPECT YOU TO HAVE COMPLETED THIS HOMEWORK THE NEXT TIME YOU HAVE THEM FOR CLASS.
