Oonagh, Emer & Ciara here from Saint Catherine’s College Media Club!
As part of our project for the BBC Schools’ Report we investigated the recent successes our school has had in Gaelic Game Competitions.
We are immensely proud of our sporting teams in Saint Catherine’s College! Our U-16 and U-20 teams have beaten off fierce competition in the past few weeks, to secure their respective Ulster Championship titles.
Surprisingly, the teams have achieved all this without having adequate facilities in the school. In fact, they are forced to borrow club pitches and community facilities and we are the only school in the locality without our own grass pitch!
Firstly, we interviewed Fionnuala McKenna – former captain of our Ulster Final winning U-16 Team and current member of the U-20 Ladies’ Football Team. This interview gave us a valuable insight into the hardships the girls face; we also learned about the dedication and commitment required to succeed at this level.
Our next interview was with Mrs. Fionnuala McGrath – Head of P.E. in the school. She illustrated the fact that she would love nothing more than to have better sporting facilities for her teams but that current funding is insufficient to provide us with what we need.
Finally, we spoke with Miss Caoimhe Marley, P.E. teacher in the school and Captain of the Armagh Ladies Senior Team. She highlighted the gender inequality regarding Gaelic Games. She told us of many occasions when she has encountered discrimination against women in her sport.
These interviews were crucial to our project, but they also enabled us to improve our interviewing skills and techniques and have fun at the same time!
We hope you enjoy watching our broadcast as much as we enjoyed making it!
