Media Club report on their 'Making News with the BBC'
Hello!
Hannah and Orla from St. Catherine’s College Media Club here!
As a part of our involvement in the BBC Schools’ Report, we had the opportunity to work on an interview with former Deputy First Minister, Mr. Seamus Mallon on Thursday, 21st February 2008. Mr. Mallon is a former teacher in our school.
Oonagh and Ciara presented Mr. Mallon with some carefully researched questions for the interview, while Emma had the onerous task of filming it. The interview took place in Mrs. McDonald’s office and some local press and staff from the BBC were there too. Being in the Principal’s Office has never been so much fun!
The purpose of this interview was to find out more about The Good Friday Agreement as it is approaching its tenth anniversary. This Agreement has had an enormous effect on life in Northern Ireland; we were keen to explore this in order to gain a deeper understanding of our chequered history and of how we became a fortunate generation in Northern Ireland to live in peaceful times.
As former Deputy First Minister & former Deputy Leader of the SDLP, we felt that Mr. Mallon could provide us with a unique insight into the laying of the political foundations on which the current institutions have been built.
Our second interview with Mr. Niall Blaney, T.D. for Donegal North-East, took place on 5th March and he was ably interviewed by Emma and Orla.As an elected representative for the Dáil in Dublin and Co-Chairperson for the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body he is playing an integral role in ensuring that the Governments in Dublin, Belfast and London co-operate fully with each other so that the potential of Northern Ireland and all of its people can be maximised.
These interviews were invaluable for our project with the BBC Schools’ Report and were highly informative.
We hope you enjoy watching our broadcast as much as we enjoyed making it!
