Hello! We are Orla and Emma and we have been members of Miss Garry’s after school Media Group for two months now. We have been busy preparing for two upcoming projects for The Belfast Telegraph and BBC Schools’ Report. On the 31st of January the BBC Big Yellow Bus came to the school to teach us how to use equipment for broadcasting. While you were having your day off watching TV, we were making TV! Sparky, the camera man showed us different camera angles and how to make the best out of each shot. He demonstrated how to record an interview using the techniques we had learned. This was a challenging task but great fun all the same.Later, we moved onto the bus and recorded our own radio shows and news broadcasts. It was amusing to hear our own voices coming out of the loudspeakers! We also edited our own radio broadcast, cutting out any errors and adding in music. When we thought the day couldn’t get any better Martina Purdy, BBC’s Political Correspondent arrived. She discussed with us the art of writing for newspapers and for radio and television news broadcasts. This day was really enjoyable and an interesting insight into the Media Communications. On Thursday 20th of this week our club will be meeting and interviewing Seamus Mallon, a former Teacher at St. Catherine’s College. He is a former Deputy First Minister for the Assembly and is also former Deputy Leader of the SDLP. We’ll keep you updated on how this interview went. Talk to you soon! Emma and Orla.

This year the environmental club are carrying out a project on bees. Some of you may have already completed one of our questionnaires. We want to help protect bees in Ireland because, although you may not know it, bees are very important. Why are they important you might ask? Well bees are important for many different reasons and these are described below.Bees make honey, but what other things do bees do? Bees are of immeasurable value to our environment. Bees are very, very important as pollinators of fruits and vegetables that we eat, or feed to livestock. Bees also pollinate plants we get our clothes from (cotton) as well as plants that line our rivers and streams and control erosion. Bees and other insects pollinate many plants world-wide, and these plants form the forests, grasslands and jungles that provide habitat for animals everywhere! The harvest from honeybees of honey, pollen, wax and propolis has nutritional, craft, manufacturing, and medical applications. Pollination by bees is important for genetic sustainability. Genes that have evolved in other animals are important to our future, too.The economic value of honey bees and bumble bees as pollinators of commercially grown insect pollinated crops in the UK has been estimated at over £200 million per year.Part of our plan is to have a bee garden in the school grounds. We are also going to make bee nests and put them round the school. How can you get involved? If you would like to get involved simply ask Mrs Burnett, Miss Hughes or Miss Mone. Bun Sale As part of our project we are going to have a bun sale in the Crush Hall. All money raised will go the ‘Bees for Africa’ campaign run by he charity ‘Bothar’Look out for another sale we are going to have later in the year. We are planning on making beauty products for you to buy that we have made using beeswax!

Our school, St Catherine’s College, is working with Trócaire to help those in the developing world by undertaking a 24 Hour Sponsored Fast. The Sponsored Fast gives us students a feeling of how those living in the third world feel for just one day. But the difference is that we know there is food at the end of the 24 hours. We can feel how others feel without food for one day, but our hunger only lasts that long, others’ hunger could last an eternity. Every person in this school has the opportunity to take part in the fast, so everyone is hungry together! This also means that we are able to raise an amazing amount of money at the end of it all! Our school is also selling Trócaire bracelets and badges, which cost £1 each. I took my Trócaire form home and handed it to my family. I made sure that everyone gave me at least £10! One of my parents took my form into work and I was able to raise loads of money! I felt really pleased with my self because Trócaire’s main aim this year is climate change, and I really wanted to make a difference. Our pollution isn’t having a big effect on us at the minute, but it affects the developing countries massively! I knew that I had to do something and wanted to raise a minimum of £50. After the end of everything, I managed to raise £100. Another person in our class raised £120, so hopefully we are on the way to becoming the top fundraising class in our year! As for me, I raised £37 for Trócaire by taking my sponsor form into my auntie’s work! Together we can make a difference! Our Trócaire Blog by Two Year 10 Students
