Friday, 15th February saw the first in-service day for the joint staffs of Saint Catherine’s College and Mount Saint Catherine’s Primary School which share the heritage of the network of Sacred Heart schools. The theme of the conference was character formation, which is central to the philosophy of Sacred Heart Education worldwide. Speakers at the event included his Eminence Cardinal Seán Brady, Michelle Gildernew, Minister of Agriculture and Ciara Hughes, Scientist. Ciara, a past pupil of Saint Catherine’s College and Tullysaran P.S., spoke of how the opportunities afforded to her at school moulded her character and contributed to the values she holds today. Michelle Gildernew, who is a past pupil of Saint Catherine’s College and St. Joseph’s P.S. Caledon, highlighted the pivotal role teachers play in character formation. She drew on school experiences which influenced her, enabling her to embark on her career in politics. The Minister stressed the importance of equal opportunities for children of all abilities in the diverse and rapidly-changing society of today. In his address Cardinal Brady emphasised the fact that Catholic Education is committed to the formation of the whole child in a fair and just manner and he commended the staff for the quality of their relationships with the children within their care. In thanking the speakers, Mrs Margaret Martin, Sacred Head Network Co-ordinator, who organised the event, added that the focus was on education in the widest sense of the word, equipping young people with life skills. In her closing remarks, Mrs Deirdre McDonald, Principal of Saint Catherine’s College, said that the parents of Saint Catherine’s students should be in no doubt that the staff of both schools were totally committed to upholding the values of Sacred Heart Education where each child is valued and respected in a welcoming and secure environment.
