On 21st June thirteen sixth formers, accompanied by two members of staff, Ms Miriam Mone and Mrs Bronagh Mc Kane, from Saint Catherines College, will travel to Kenya to participate in a summer scheme run by Helping U Grow Outreach to Africa Association. This is the sixth year that a school party from Saint Catherines College has participated in the H .U.G project which demonstrates how committed the school is to actively living out their Sacred Heart Ethos. The students were delighted to accept the gift of ten recycled laptops for their sister school Laina Saba, situated in the slums of Kiberia, Nairobi. The laptops were kindly donated by Mr. Eamon Mc Kinney, on behalf of Golden Cow Dairies. Michelle Mc Cartan speaking on behalf of H.U.G said:Words cannot describe the delight of the staff and students when they receive this gift.I visited this school in February of this year and was overwhelmed by the eagerness of these young children to learn. Despite living in a slum area their standard of education matches ours but certainly not our resources. Last year when there was political unrest during the Kenyan elections, this school proved to be a haven of peace and a feeding centre for many displaced persons. The school building itself is in a very bad state of repair and H.U.G are actively fundraising to assist the schools building programme. Once again I must thank the Armagh and district communities who have so generously assisted the girls with their fundraising. One hears so much about the economic crisis but here in Armagh the economic crisis has not affected the hearts of its people!Laina Saba is a primary school connected to the International Network of Sacred Heart Schools which includes Saint Catherines College and Mount Saint Catherines Primary School.
