Jackie Burke wasn't what we might regard as a typical young drug addict. He was never in trouble. His home life was good. He had a girlfriend. He showed promise at school. But at 11, he started to smoke. At 13, he first got drunk. A year later, he progressed to cannabis; no hangovers. Amphetamines followed. At 16, he left home for a life of drug-filled abandon in England. (The Independent)Now, at the age of 56, Jackie spends his time traveling Ireland visiting schools and describing to pupils how his love affair with drink and drugs almost killed him. He has spoken to thousands of pupils and retold his life story on countless occasions. In fact, he recently published his life story in a new book called No Deals. The talk was organised by the St. Catherines College Learning for Life and Work Department. All pupils in KS4 are currently sitting a G.C.S.E in this subject. Pupils in years 11 and 12 are embarking on a project in which they explore the issues surrounding teenage binge drinking. The pupils of St. Catherines were fixated by Jackies life story and the honesty of his tale. Jackie now has a wife, whom he met after embracing Christianity, and three young children. He has now devoted the rest of his life to educating teenagers on the perils of drink and drugs.Saint Catherines College students of GCSE Learning for Life and Work were enthralled by the talk given by Jackie Burke on the dangers of alcohol and drugs
