CHOOSING YOUR A-LEVEL / BTEC  SUBJECTS

Ag roghnú d’ábhair Ard Leibheil agus BTEC

You will soon be making decision about which subjects you’d like to study Post-16. It is therefore important that you make informed choices. This will involve some research on your part - finding out what is involved in each subject and whether that subject suits you and your learning style.

Roghnóidh tú na hábhair a ba mhaith leat a dhéanamh iar-16 gan mhoill. Tá sé ríthábhachtach mar sin de go ndéanann tú an rogha ceart duit féin. Beidh taighde le déanamh agat – Faigh amach cad é atá  i gceist le gach ábhar agus déan cinnte de go bhfoireann sé do do stíl foghlama féin.

The subjects you choose will depend on a number of factors:

  • Whether you like the subject or not – the more you enjoy a subject, the easier it is to learn
  • Whether you’re already good at the subject – your Tracking reports, Mock exam results and the results of GCSE modules taken to date will help inform your choices. It is essential that you speak to your subject teacher, who will offer you sound advice on the subject.
  • Your research. Look at university prospectuses and speak to Mr Moore. You may need particular subjects for your career. You should also access the exam board websites which offer “Student Guides” on the subjects they offer.
  • Choosing a career is a process which develops over time and involves a series of decisions as you make your way through life.  Your choice of Post-16 subjects should keep career choices open to you.
  • Think ahead and choose subjects that:
  • Complement each other at Advanced Level
  • Are required for entry into university courses
  • Are required for entry into Regional College courses (SRC)
  • May assist you in getting a job

Choose subjects which

  • give you a broad and balanced curriculum and which offer you as many career options as possible
  • your teachers suggest suit your interests and abilities

Discuss your choices with parents and seek advice from those who have already studied these subjects.  After all, you will be making decisions which you will have to live with for two years – so select wisely.

You should understand from your Careers sessions that all third level courses require passes in English and Maths at GCSE level.  Many courses also require a pass in a Science subject at GCSE level.  An increasing number of university courses are now also stipulating that a pass at Grade B and above is needed in some subjects.

You must spend time researching your subjects and finding out from subject teachers what each subject involves, in terms of:

  • reading and writing requirements
  • coursework components and marks available for  coursework
  • oral exams
  • practical / fieldwork skills involved
  • examsHere you will find details about the A Level and BTEC courses on offer.
  • Tá sonraí sa leabhrán seo faoi na roghanna atá agat ag A leibheil agus BTEC.
  • Speak to the school’s Careers Officer (Mr B Devlin) or make a personal appointment with Mr Moore (Careers Department) if you need additional information.
