Business Studies

The Department has an excellent reputation with students and employers over the last 30 years. Subjects delivered are positioned between traditional Business Studies and computer related employability skills.

Business Studies is taught in designated rooms. These rooms have computer access, an interactive white board and a data projector to enhance teaching and learning.

Educational visits are widely used as a teaching aid. Students have visited Ulster Television, the Belfast Telegraph, Tayto Castle and Norbrook. Students are actively involved in ‘Young Enterprise’, and Young Consumers competitions.

At Key stage 4 students can study GCSE Business Studies and GCSE Business Communication Systems. Great emphasis is placed on using a variety of teaching strategies.

All Year 11 GCSE Business students compete for the prestigious Young Business Person Shield. Pupils are required to develop a mini business from an original idea, conducting market research, producing a final product and successfully selling their products to staff and pupils. The young tycoons have to evaluate their business idea and make a PowerPoint presentation to the ‘Dragons’ Den’. The budding entrepreneurs present their business plans and answered a series of drilling questions from a panel of judges. The judges or ‘Dragons’ are a variety of local business entrepreneurs that have developed strong links with the Business Studies Department.

In Sixth Form students can take Business Studies at AS and A2 level.  Sixth form students can participate in the Young Enterprise Company Programme, and complete the internationally accredited OCR Level 3 Young Enterprise qualification that awards UCAS tariff points.
