P.E. Sport and Leisure at St.Catherine’s

The P.E. Department is comprised of four P.E. staff. One teaches only P.E. while the other three teach both P.E and one or more other subjects.   Three staff are female and one male.

Irish medium P.E is taught with male and female staff teaching as a team.   G.C.S.E P.E is offered to all students, through Irish and English

The P.E. Department operates in both the Main School building and the Barat building. Inside facilities (two gym/assembly halls) and outside facilities (3 hockey pitches/athletics tracks, six netball courts, a basketball court and six tennis courts) are shared by the P.E. staff and Coaches.   Use is also made of the grass and 3G playing surfaces at Cathedral Road Recreation Centre for after school practices and matches

The P.E. Programmes of Study are delivered through the Key Stage 3 and 4 Curriculum and GCSE P.E. is offered to Key Stage 4 students.

The extra-curricular P.E. Programme is extensive and offers Gaelic Football, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Camogie, Swimming, Tennis, Athletics, Golf, Volleyball, Horse riding and Cross-Country. Teams compete in all relevant District and Ulster competitions, leagues and tournaments.

The school also has a high profile in the local community, taking part in area swimming galas, the Armagh Road Race,  Orienteering, cross community ventures and local coaching courses. Many of our pupils participate in local clubs and teams, playing, coaching and administrating.

As a Department we aim to support the all-round development of a healthy lifestyle and to promote the successful community involvement of our students.  We are a long time partner of Special Olympics Ulster and many of our pupils are registered volunteers.

Many of our students play for local clubs and coach or administrate at various levels.   We also have a close relationship with our past P.E students, many of whom regularly assist with coaching, refereeing and general duties.

We are particularly proud of our extensive range of provision and although success ( and we have many successes! ) is an ambition, it is not the only motivator.   We aim to develop the all-round skills of our individuals and teams.  Taking part is our fundamental aim.

We have recently introduced a new and innovative leadership programme to reward the pupils who willingly give of their time to assist inside and outside school with sports related coaching and mentoring.

Level 1 Mentoring and leadership training awards are made at Key Stage 3 Prize giving.

Level 2 MLTs at key Stage 4 Prize giving and,

Level 3 MLTs at Sixth form/Leavers Prize giving
